Take Charge: How to Lower Your Diabetes Risk

When I talk to my patients about type 2 diabetes, I tell them that they have the power to prevent this all too common disease. By making changes in your lifestyle, you can take control of your health.

Prevent Diabetes – Start Today

The numbers speak for themselves: About 1 in 3 adults – and 1 in 2 older adults! – is at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, based on the current level of glucose in their blood.

When you have diabetes, there is too much sugar (called “glucose”) in your blood. It’s a serious disease that affects over 25 million Americans.

People who are overweight and don’t exercise are at risk for the most common type of diabetes, called type 2 diabetes. You may also be more likely to get type 2 diabetes if you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Check out these resources for quick tips to help you fight back:

Talk with your doctor about how you can take steps to lower your risk for diabetes. Together, you can make a plan to help you stay diabetes-free.
