Breastfeeding has many health benefits for moms and babies. It helps protect your baby from illness and gives you and your baby time to be close and bond.

You can make healthy food choices while breastfeeding.

Eating healthy will help you and your baby get the nutrients you both need. Use these tips to get started.

Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits.

Drink plenty of water.

Limit foods high in “empty calories,” like desserts and fried foods.

Ask your doctor if you need to take a multivitamin.

Tip:

If you know someone who is breastfeeding, help her get enough fluids — take her a glass of water the next time she’s breastfeeding.
